If your BFT gate motor has stopped responding, grinds when it runs, or trips its breaker every time you use the gate, we can replace it, usually within one visit. Most BFT gate motor replacements in Brooklyn run between $650 and $1,400 installed, depending on the model and whether the arm, control board, or receiver needs to go with it. We stock BFT-compatible parts on the truck and install them same-day in most neighborhoods around the borough.
Most Brooklyn homeowners discover the motor has failed on an ordinary morning, the gate won’t open when they’re backing out, and the backup key release is stiff from disuse. You stand there turning a manual ring that hasn’t moved in three years, and you realize the motor has been failing quietly for weeks: slower travel, a longer pause before it starts, a hum that wasn’t there last spring. By the time it quits, the useful part is deciding whether to replace the motor alone or the whole drive assembly.
Cody Beckman has handled enough BFT units in Brooklyn to know that model identification matters more than brand loyalty. The right replacement depends on the exact motor series, not just the BFT name on the cover, and we match that before we quote anything.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT makes several motor lines, and they don’t all swap between each other. The Deimos series, the Phobos series, and the older Aries and Icaro models each use different mounting footprints and arm geometry. A Deimos BT A400 motor won’t bolt onto a Phobos swing arm without an adapter plate, and even then the limit switch travel is wrong.
Start by reading the label on the side of the motor body. BFT prints the model code there: Deimos BT A400, Phobos N BT A25, Icaro, and so on. If the label is faded, look at the motor length, the Deimos and Phobos units run about 14 to 18 inches end to end, while the Icaro is noticeably shorter. You can also check the control board inside the gate housing, which usually carries its own BFT model sticker that survived better than the one on the motor.
For BFT specifically, we lean toward genuine BFT or BFT-licensed replacement motors rather than generic aftermarket clones. BFT uses a proprietary encoder signal on many models, and a clone motor will sometimes turn the arm but confuse the limit logic. That leads to a gate that stops six inches short or over-travels against the post. We do stock both OEM BFT parts and a short list of quality aftermarket motors we’ve verified work properly on the common boards. The OEM-versus-aftermarket decision is one we make honestly with you, based on the age of your unit and how long you plan to keep the gate.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Gate hesitates before moving. The motor’s start capacitor is weak or the internal windings are degrading. You’ll notice a one- or two-second pause between pressing the remote and any movement. In Brooklyn’s winter damp, this gets worse before it gets better.
- The motor hums but the gate doesn’t travel. The arm’s internal gears or the motor’s drive pinion are stripped. This is a mechanical failure inside the housing, not a battery issue. The hum means the motor winding is getting power but can’t turn the output shaft.
- Gate opens halfway and reverses or stops. The encoder that tells the control board where the gate is located has failed. On BFT boards, this often reads as a “no limit” or “encoder error” code. Replacing the motor usually resolves it because the encoder lives inside the motor assembly.
- Breaker trips when the gate cycles. Moisture ingress in the motor windings, common after a few coastal winters or a nor’easter that pushed water up against the housing. A shorted winding pulls high current and trips the panel. Don’t reset and keep using it; that strain can take out the control board too.
- Manual release is stiff or frozen. The internal clutch and release mechanism is seizing, which is a sign the motor’s lubricated parts have aged out. In Brooklyn, steel-bodied BFT motors near park-facing lots or anywhere with heavy tree drip see this after about six to eight years.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed BFT motor replacement in Brooklyn runs within a range that breaks down like this:
- Small swing motors (Phobos N, Icaro-type): $650 to $850 installed, parts and labor together.
- Mid-size swing/slide motors (Deimos BT A400, older Aries): $850 to $1,150 installed.
- Heavy slide motor systems with separate gearbox: $1,150 to $1,400 installed.
You’ll see the exact number in writing before we touch anything. That price includes the new motor, the removal of the old one, reusing your existing arm or slide rack where it’s still serviceable, re-calibrating the limit switches and remote control, and testing the full cycle at least three times. If replacing the motor reveals a failing capacitor or cracked limit switch, we show you the part and quote the add-on before doing it, never after.
Every motor replacement we do carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the new motor misbehaves within a year, we come back and make it right without debating who caused it. Most Brooklyn BFT gates also benefit from a fresh set of weather seals at the same visit, which we’ll mention if the old ones are cracked, but we won’t push anything you don’t need.
DIY or Call Us?
If your BFT motor has failed, the safe DIY work is limited to reading the model label and maybe confirming power at the outlet or breaker. You can also check whether the manual release turns freely, but that’s about where it should stop. These motors run on 120V line voltage and connect to a control board that carries stored charge even after the breaker is off. Touching the wrong terminal on a BFT board while replacing a motor can send voltage through you, and it can also cook the board, which turns a motor job into a much bigger bill.
The other place DIY goes wrong is the limit re-calibration. A BFT gate that over-travels after a motor swap can pinch the post, bend the arm, or crush a child’s hand in the gap. We set the travel limits and the obstruction sensitivity as part of every replacement, and we test the auto-reverse with a solid object before we call the job done. A gate that sticks today doesn’t fix itself by next week, but it usually isn’t as complicated as it looks either. If you’re in Brooklyn and the motor has quit, call (934) 649-3673 and we’ll talk through what you’re seeing before we send anyone out.
FAQs
Most BFT gate motors last seven to ten years in Brooklyn, with motors on north-facing or heavily shaded lots failing on the earlier side due to damp and condensation. A motor that’s reached eight years and started hesitating is nearing the end of its normal service life.
Sometimes. If the failure is a capacitor, a set of internal brushes where applicable, or a free-moving release, we can repair it for less than a full replacement. If the windings have shorted or the encoder has failed, replacement is the honest fix. Call (934) 649-3673 and describe what the gate is doing, and we’ll tell you which situation you’re likely in before we book the visit.
Most BFT motor replacements are finished in two to three hours from arrival to final cycle test. We bring the common BFT motors for Deimos, Phobos, Icaro, and Aries units on the truck, so we usually complete the swap the same day.
Yes, we stock the motors, capacitors, limit switch kits, and control boards for the most common BFT swing and slide models. We also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates, so if your gate mixes components, we can usually cover it in one visit.
If your BFT gate motor needs to be replaced in Brooklyn, call (934) 649-3673. You’ll get a live person, a straight conversation about the model you have, and a written quote before any tools come off the truck. Estimates are free, and the price you approve is the price you pay.
