Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Brooklyn Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Ghost Controls-compatible keypads and intercom modules across Brooklyn, with most repairs running between $185 and $420 installed, and we can usually have a technician at your door the same day you call. The part itself is the predictable piece: a new OEM-branded keypad runs $70 to $140, while intercom boards land between $110 and $220 depending on whether you have the wired or wireless version. What you’re really paying for is the diagnosis and the wiring work, because a Ghost Controls keypad that reads “dead” is often fine while the relay behind it has corroded or a low-voltage line has shorted against the gate post. If you’ve noticed the pad beeps but the gate doesn’t move, or the intercom rings but you can’t hear anyone, you’re in the right place.

Most Brooklyn owners discover the failure on a wet Tuesday in March, keypad buttons suddenly needing three hard presses before the code takes, or the intercom audio turning to static. We’ve seen it on brownstones in Park Slope and on detached garages out in Mill Basin. The parts are built to a price point, and a few winters of salt air and freeze-thaw cycles near the Gowanus or the Belt Parkway take a measurable toll.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls uses two main keypad generations. The older AXS-1 and AXS-2 keypads are standalone units wired into the gate opener’s accessory terminal block with a simple three-wire connection: common, normally open, and 12V positive. The newer DTP series keypads pair wirelessly to GTO and Ghost Controls boards and use a rolling code, which is more convenient but introduces a pairing headache when the board loses memory after a power surge. Intercom systems are less standardized: some Ghost Controls setups use a generic wired intercom wired into the opener’s “open” command, while others use the Ghost Controls-branded wireless intercom kit. If you can see a model number printed on the back of the keypad or on the intercom’s circuit board, that is the single most useful thing you can tell us over the phone.

We’re an independent gate repair company in Brooklyn, not affiliated with Ghost Controls. That matters because we are not obligated to sell you the most expensive OEM replacement. For keypads, OEM is usually worth the money; the aftermarket universal keypads work on many openers, but Ghost Controls boards are particular about the accessory relay, and we have seen cheap clones fail within six months. For intercoms, we often recommend a quality aftermarket unit from DoorKing or Linear that costs less than OEM and outlasts it. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing on the truck, so if the diagnostic points to a different component, we usually have it with us already.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Buttons need multiple hard presses before the code registers. The carbon contacts inside the keypad wear down, and moisture accelerates it. This is the most common failure we see in Brooklyn, especially on keypads mounted facing east toward the harbor wind.
  • Keypad beeps and accepts the code, but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad itself is fine. The relay in the gate opener’s accessory board has likely failed, or the wiring between keypad and board has gone open. We test this by jumping the terminals; if the gate opens, the keypad is the problem. If it doesn’t, it’s the board.
  • Intercom audio is static or one-way. The microphone and speaker in these units are cheap electret components. Salt moisture from Brooklyn’s coastal air corrodes the connections, and you get that crackling, underwater sound. Sometimes a cleaning fixes it; usually the module needs replacement.
  • Keypad works intermittently after rain. Water is getting inside the housing. Ghost Controls keypads are sealed, but the gasket shrinks after a few New York summers, and once water pools inside the case, the circuit traces corrode. It will only get worse.
  • Intercom rings but the gate button does nothing. The intercom’s “door release” wire has come loose or the relay inside the intercom handset has burned out. This is a ten-minute fix if it’s the wire, a full handset replacement if it’s the relay.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Brooklyn, expect these installed ranges:

  • Keypad replacement, OEM Ghost Controls: $185 to $280 installed
  • Keypad replacement, aftermarket equivalent: $160 to $230 installed
  • Wired intercom replacement: $260 to $420 installed, depending on wiring run length
  • Wireless intercom kit replacement: $310 to $460 installed
  • Diagnostic-only visit if we find a loose wire instead of a failed part: $95 flat

The range depends on what we find once the cover comes off. A straight keypad swap on an existing bracket is quick. If we have to run new low-voltage wire through a gate post or repair a corroded terminal block, that adds labor. You see the exact number in writing before we touch anything. Every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something we fixed fails within a year, we make it right. No fine print, no argument. And when our technician walks through your Brooklyn home or yard, shoe covers go on, drop cloths go down, and you get a photo of the clean-up before they leave.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing you can safely check yourself, and it takes one minute. Look at the keypad and see if the LED lights up at all. No light usually means the wire has come loose or the transformer feeding the board has tripped a GFCI outlet, and a dead unit is not worth opening. But we will say this plainly: a Ghost Controls keypad and intercom run on low-voltage wiring, and while you are not going to get a lethal shock, the bigger risk is to the gate board itself. Shorting the wrong two terminals while the board is powered can fry the opener’s main control board, and that is a $300 to $500 mistake. We have had customers try to wire in a universal keypad they bought online and end up with a gate that will not close because the safety sensor loop got jumped accidentally. If you are comfortable with a multimeter and you have the Ghost Controls wiring diagram in front of you, a keypad swap is doable. If you are not sure which wire is common, call us at (934) 649-3673 instead. It will cost less than replacing a board you shorted.

Cody Beckman, who runs our Brooklyn crew, grew up in Los Angeles and learned metalwork and structural repair at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before spending close to two decades doing gate work full-time. He will tell you exactly what the keypad relay is doing before he touches it, so you understand what you are paying for, whether that is a $95 wiring fix or a $400 intercom swap. A gate that sticks today doesn’t fix itself by next week, but it usually isn’t as complicated as it looks either.
