DoorKing Access Control Installation: The Brooklyn Owner’s Guide

DoorKing access control installation in Brooklyn typically runs $850 to $1,900 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a failed board, adding a keypad, or upgrading to a telephone entry system. We stock DoorKing-compatible circuit boards, keypads, RF receivers, and power supplies on the truck, and we can usually have your gate opening again the same day we diagnose it. Most Brooklyn owners call us after the gate stops responding to a keypad or remote, or after a storm knocks out the entry system entirely.

The frustrating part is that DoorKing gear doesn’t usually die all at once. It fades. The keypad works one day, then needs three presses the next. The remote only opens the gate from twenty feet instead of sixty. A relay clicks but the gate doesn’t move. By the time most people call, they’ve been fighting the system for weeks. Our job is to figure out whether you need a $140 relay swap or a full $1,400 access panel replacement, and to give you that answer in writing before we touch anything.

We’re an independent Brooklyn gate company, not a DoorKing dealer or corporate service line. That means we stock parts for DoorKing alongside LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, and we match the part to your system rather than pushing a whole new panel when a single component would do the job.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing makes three main access control lines that show up in Brooklyn backyards and driveway gates: the 1812 Access Plus telephone entry system, the 1830 series multi-tenant panels, and the 6000/6100 standalone keypad controllers. The 1812 is the one we see most often on brownstone carriage gates and single-family driveway gates in Park Slope, Ditmas Park, and Bay Ridge. It’s a metal box about the size of a hardcover book, usually mounted on a gooseneck post near the gate.

The compatibility gotcha with DoorKing is the board revision. A 1812 board from 2012 and a 1812 board from 2022 look nearly identical from the outside, but the firmware and ribbon cable connectors changed between revisions. If you order a used board online without checking the revision number printed on the PCB, you may get something that physically fits and still won’t talk to your keypad. We always pull the board, note the revision, and match it before ordering anything.

On the parts decision: DoorKing OEM boards and keypads are solid, but the aftermarket power supplies and RF receivers from Linear and LiftMaster are often more reliable in Brooklyn’s humidity, and they tend to cost 20 to 30 percent less. We’ll install either, and we’ll tell you which one makes sense for your panel. The keypad itself is almost always worth buying OEM. Aftermarket DoorKing keypad overlays and buttons wear faster, especially on south-facing gates that get full Brooklyn summer sun.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad works intermittently or not at all. This usually points to a failing membrane keypad or a cold solder joint on the board. Brooklyn winters are hard on these; the temperature swing between a February night and a warm afternoon causes the board to expand and contract, and after five or six years a weak joint finally lets go.
  • Remote range has dropped to nearly nothing. If you have to stand right next to the receiver with the remote pressed against the box, the RF receiver module is likely failing or the antenna wire has corroded. We see this a lot within a mile of the Gowanus Canal and anywhere salt air drifts in from the Lower Bay.
  • Gate clicks but doesn’t open. The access control board is sending the signal, but the relay or the gate operator isn’t responding. Sometimes it’s a $25 relay socket; sometimes it’s the operator’s capacitor. We test the relay output with a meter before recommending anything.
  • Telephone entry works but the display is dead. The LCD or the backlight driver on the 1812 series fails before the main board does. The panel may still open the gate, but residents can’t see the directory, and visitors can’t scroll names.
  • System resets or loses programming after every power blip. The backup battery or the memory chip is shot. Con Edison service interruptions in Brooklyn are frequent enough that this becomes a real problem for unmaintained panels.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Access control installation in Brooklyn breaks down like this: a new DoorKing 1812 Access Plus board runs $450 to $650 for the part alone, a replacement keypad is $120 to $220, and an RF receiver is $80 to $160. Labor adds $300 to $500 for a straightforward swap, and more if we’re pulling new wire through conduit or relocating the panel. Most jobs land between $850 and $1,900 all in.

Component Brooklyn Installed Price
DoorKing keypad replacement $250 – $450
RF receiver swap (aftermarket or OEM) $180 – $320
Access control board replacement $650 – $1,100
Full 1812 panel + keypad + receiver $1,200 – $1,900

Every quote includes the part, the labor, the wiring check, and a written price before we start. We don’t do the thing where the estimate comes in low and the invoice comes in high. The number we hand you is the number you pay, unless we open the panel and find real damage we couldn’t see from the outside, and even then we stop and call you before adding anything. Every access control install is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if the keypad acts up or the range drops within a year, we come back and make it right without a fight.

DIY or Call Us?

DoorKing access control panels run on low voltage (16 to 24 volts AC), so the shock risk is minimal. The real danger is in the gate itself. If you’re poking around the access panel while the gate operator’s high-tension springs or chain drive are live, and the gate decides to move, you’re in a bad spot. We never recommend diagnosing or replacing access control parts on an armed gate operator. The springs and cables under tension on a Brooklyn driveway gate can hold enough stored energy to break a hand or worse. That’s not a scare line; it’s just the physics.

What you can do safely: check that the breaker for the gate operator is on, look for an obvious popped fuse on the DoorKing board, and make sure the antenna wire hasn’t been yanked loose. If those three things check out and the system still misbehaves, call us at (934) 649-3673. Cody Beckman will walk through what you’re seeing over the phone before we even schedule a visit, so you’ll have a good idea whether this is a $180 relay or a $1,400 board issue before our truck rolls up.
